How does a fat burner work and what to realistically expect from it?

Ako funguje spaľovač tukov a čo od neho reálne čakať

A fat burner does not burn body fat. It is a marketing name for a category of supplements that contain mostly stimulants and herbal extracts. What disappears from the body during weight loss disappears due to a caloric deficit — that is, because you expend more energy than you take in. A supplement only enters this equation indirectly.

What do these supplements really do?

A typical incinerator relies on three mechanisms:

  • Stimulation. Caffeine and related substances increase alertness and subjectively perceived energy. Practical impact: you are more likely to go to a workout and more likely to complete it at a reasonable intensity.
  • Thermogenesis. Some substances slightly increase heat production, and thus energy expenditure. We are talking about dozens of kilocalories a day — a fraction of what one missed sweet will do.
  • Micronutrient supplementation. Chromium, niacin, and other substances involved in energy metabolism. If you don't have enough of them in your diet, supplementation will help. If you do, excess won't improve anything.

Why it doesn't work without a deficit

Imagine the difference in numbers. The thermogenic effect of a supplement is around 30–100 kcal per day at realistic doses. One large cappuccino with syrup has 250 kcal. If you take a supplement but don't change your diet, those few dozen kilocalories will be lost in the noise of normal variations in daily intake.

On the other hand, with a deficit of 300–500 kcal per day, you will achieve a loss of approximately 0.3–0.5 kg per week — and that is a pace that can be maintained for months. Supplementation in this scenario helps by making the deficit easier to live with: you have more energy and are less likely to give up.

What to look for when choosing

  • Amounts listed. If the manufacturer only says "proprietary blend 500 mg," you don't know if you're getting an effective dose or a trace amount.
  • Realistic claims. A supplement that promises weight loss without changing your diet is either lying or contains something that shouldn't be there.
  • Total caffeine per day. The European Food Safety Authority considers a daily intake of up to 400 mg to be safe for a healthy adult. Supplements count towards this balance just like coffee.

When does it make no sense to solve them?

If you sleep for five hours, eat irregularly, and exercise only once every two weeks, a supplement won't save you anything. In such a state, sleep and regularity will bring a much greater effect than any capsule. Supplements are the last few percent, not the foundation.
